LIS-Kakuma African Lesbian and Kids Support Project

Lotus Insight Sangha, as fiscal sponsor, has begun to collaborate with the Seattle Kakuma Refugee Lesbians & Kids Support Project.

We are helping  gather funds for medicine, food, shelters, and rents, for lesbian sisters and their families stranded in Kenya waiting to be granted exit visas. Because they are queer, they have been waiting many years to get official status to emigrate to safe countries.

As you may know, countries such as Uganda, Burundi and Congo are extremely homophobic and transphobic with long prison sentences, even death for queer people. Seeking refuge in the Kakuma Refugee camp in Kenya, they have encountered more attacks and violence, and years of delay in processing their asylum status.

Recently, after many years in desperate conditions in Block 13 of the enormous Kakuma Refugee camp in Kenya, this support project has helped 3 lesbian families resettle in Canada with the incredible work of the Canadian group Rainbow Railroad. We are working to sustain another 17 families in Kenya while they struggle to reach safety.
